Way back in the late nineties, at the same time as I started with HTML, I made the switch to Apple Macintosh. Ever since I used it as my main development platform. Setting it up as a web server, database server and installing whatever other tools you need on it is not that hard. Most of the under the hood stuff I use for developing websites I set up in the '/usr/local' folder. In order to be able to do this I enabled the root user of my Mac and I do all the installing in this folder as root user.
Installed under '/usr/local' I have:
and this is my path: /usr/local/mysql/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/git/bin
